This place was awesome...from the food to the service! They worked with us on the reservation on a clearly busy Saturday night. The food was perfect - scallops were delicious. I had the black grouper. Perfectly prepared. We thought portions were generous. Definitely will make our list of places to visit again!

Second time eating at Charlie's while visiting Hilton Head. Probably the best place on the island. This trip's meal was french onion soup, house salad, local sword with green peppercorn sauce. French onion came out piping hot. I like the use of the bread rather then croutons. Main dish was excellent. Fish was super fresh and the sauce super tasty. My wife got the scallop with shrimp sauce dish. It was flawless the first time she ever ordered it, however, this time the scallops were just slightly over cooked. Still an excellent dish.

Amazing... best restaurant on the island with very reasonable prices!! Beautiful restaurant that has the most extensive wine menu I have ever seen. Our server was personable, near perfect. Menu is hand written and changes daily. My husband and I started with the escargot and leeks on a true French croissant. We almost ordered a second!! I ordered the seared scallops with a roasted tomato creme sauce. Scallops were cooked to perfection... the sauce was delicious. The best scallop meal I have EVER had. My husband ordered the snapper with a mushroom sauce. Fish was very fresh and tasty. I would rate it 4 starts- very good but we both loved mine more. Ended the meal with the caramel cake and he got the chocolate dessert. We licked our plates clean!! Please go by Charlie's... prices are reasonable, service is impeccable, decor is beautiful, fresh and high quality food.

This is, in my opinion, the best restaurant on Hilton Head Island. I had Ahi and instead of the sauce they recommended, I asked for the mango glaze that they had on I believe the Mahi. It was AMAZING. My wife had the mahi and my son had salmon. I honestly don't remember what the other two folks in our party had, but they were inhaling it with gusto as well. The service was outstanding. I am not sure why a previous reviewer said this was "definitely not" a place to take kids, but we took two 13 yr olds and they loved it. I saw numerous families with children younger than my son and his friend, and they all seemed to be enjoying it as well, and the restaurant staff seemed to be very happy to take care of them. I would perhaps not bring a 3 year old that is prone to tantrums, but well-behaved kids should be fine.

Scallops were great. Nice wine special. Our server was a bit too earnest at times and freaked me out a bit. We were also told nothing was available at 6 (we have a baby). Arrived for our 6:30 reservation only to find the place was half full. Shrugged it off. I suppose they have their reasons. Atmosphere was very bistro like. Great pate as well. Enjoyed our one "grown-up" night out quite a bit.

While on vacation on Hilton Head, Charlie's is a place we never miss. In roughly four or five visits, Charlie's has never failed to please and our most recent stop, Labor Day 2010, was no exception. In a week that included other HHI staples as Old Fort Pub, Red Fish and Chart House, Charlie's topped my list. Clearly seafood can't be missed when vacationing near the ocean, but Charlie's offers a French twist on the traditional staples available across the island. While, unlike the other destinations mentioned above, Charlie's menu changes daily, some of the fishes to keep your eye out for are the sockeye salmon and the swordfish. Most recently, I ordered the tilapia special--and before you jump on me, yes I know white fish like tilapia tastes like whatever its cooked with--but this special was done with a Cajun seasoning that was to die for. If you're on the Island and can only eat at one location, make this your stop. Or Old Fort Pub--I can't pick!

We went monday nite,it's half off a bottle of wine from the winelist, upto a maximum price of $100.i had a stags leap merlot for $30 and u get to take home the part u cant finish. Then again the place was crowded but to their credit the foos arrived promptly. I had the best jumbo scallops in a thai curry sauce.my wife thought it needed to.be cooked more on the inside. The sevilla style gazpacho was a refreshing start. Salmon was perfectly grilled. Desserts wre wonderful. The menu is hand written everyday and if you are a fish lover this is the place for you. 4/5 stars.

Any discussion of gourmet food on Hilton Head simply must include Charlie's. The warm, French country home atmosphere breathes life and the menu is essentially an all-star lineup of French cuisine. You certainly don't have to be a culinary expert to enjoy the experience, as the rich - and very fresh - food speaks for itself, especially when paired with one of their wines. The dining room is cozy and charmingly well-lit, and of course, the staff is always highly-informed and gracious. I've been here a half-dozen times or so, and it only gets better with each visit. And they're not paying me to say that, although it'd be nice.

Lunch was perfect, probably not worth the dinner prices, seemed to have a lot of locals there. Enjoy a very clean restaurant and Charlie's was just that. Food was timely and service was exceptional. Don't recommend taking the kids here.

This place used to be much better when it was a small quaint place where you had to walk through the kitchen to get to the bathroom. In fact, it used to be one of my favorite restaurants ever. Now it is too big and quality and service has suffered. Bad move Charlie's.

New Year's Eve! Very loud -probably caused by the room's acoustics. About 150 seated in the 3-section dining area. Initially, service was very good, but as dinner progressed the quality of service tapered off. I had the poached scallops and halibut. My wife had the grouper. All were prepared well. My mushroom ravioli was excellent. Also, my wife's lobster bisque was also very good! Dessert consisted of a soufflé and white chocolate cheesecake. the dessert took over 30 minutes to arrive - because, the waitress said, Charlie was "backed-up" on the souffle' Would probably not eat at Charlie's again -price not reasonable for the value!

Great atmosphere, decent prices and very good food! The restaurant is classy and the bar is warm and inviting. This is the kind of place you take your mother-in-law to lunch, or your husband on date night! I recommend the pate' and duck, as well as the huge cobb salad.

Dined on Saturday for the first time. The ambiance was very nice. Beautiful decor. I couldn't wait to cozy up and have an after dinner drink in the bar area. The dining room was a little noisy. Perhaps some music would quiet down the patrons. The waitress was very pleasant and attentive. She recommended a malbec for us that was not on the menu. It was a favorite if ours, so we chose the recommendation. I loved the fact that their menu is printed daily. Such cute handwriting. The fish was great. However, I didn't like that each fish came with the same steamed veggies and scalloped potatos. I had the salmon with cucumber sauce. It was a very nice pairing. We opted for espresso martinis for desert. The bartender said they were her specialty. Very good.

  • Grant R.

Loved the food, service but it was too noisy for dinner conversation.

Triggerfish with 3 mushroom sauce was perfectly done. Requested a different wine to go with it, and their suggested Vouvray was delightful. Friendly fast service.

Well, I once said go to Charlie's for the food, and, of yes, the wine is good too, befitting as good a French restaurant as you'll find in the Carolinas. To be sure, the food remains exceptional, though the simple house salad with the fabulous homemade vinaigrette has lost a step. Twice in three days we dined there, and twice the greens were a bit wilted, though it is a fair pairing: Most of the diners look a bit wilted themselves, since Hilton Head has a large share of retirees who can afford to dine out. Oh, did I mention the food? It remains the best dining room at/on Hilton Head, and most especially the fish. The best of the fresh catch, and the most imaginative preparation and presentation. Which is not to suggest that the veal tenderloin with cognac and peppercorn sauce was not the best item on the menu Monday evening. Well, I still say that even Carrie Nation should go to Charlie's for the food, though she'd be left out of much of the fun. Fact is, Charlie's has a most impressive wine list, and it's mostly too expensive for most of us. except on Monday nights, when every bottle priced at $100 or below is offered at half price. So you've always dreamt of having a $90 Pomerol decanted at your table? So now you can do it for just $45. Enjoy!

What a lovely, lovely place. Combines french technique and approach with southern market availability. Great for ladies who lunch, a romantic meal, or a fun night out with friends. From baguette to dessert, there are fresh choices for every palate.

I live in Bluffton and I have eaten here several times. There is a great atmosphere and my food has always been wonderful. I have also always been seated quickly. The martinis are great too. The last time I was there i had a steak and it melted in my mouth. Not sure why the other person gave such a low rating, when the food was good.

  • Roy C.

Charlie's is the best dining experience on HHI hands down. If you've read any of my reviews you will know I am very critical. We have eaten at practically every place on the island, in the three months we have been living here. This place has the best food of any establishment we've found here. It has a different, unique menu daily with fresh seafood and honest-to-goodness care given to every detail of its preparation. Of course you will pay for the experience, but this is HHI and I thought the price wasn't really too bad. I could have given Charlie's five stars had it not been for the group of older gentleman at the next table that were so loud and rude it was difficult to have a peaceful romantic dinner.

  • Noah K.

Fine restaurant that moved from small intimate digs to a much larger place to accommodate the crowds, once word got out. Unfortunately, the larger location gives off sort of a "corporate" feel that detracts from the special occasion aspect that the prices here would suggest. They specialize in different types of local fish you don't see just anywhere. While it's hard to go wrong here, I feel that HHI has a better choice - Sea Grass Grille that moved into Charlie's old location (see my review). Overall it's a worthy place, but unless money is no object, Sea Grass will remain our HHI special occasion restaurant.

  • Joshua S.

Outstanding food, probably the beset scallops i've ever had. Service was great, restaurant was a little off the beaten path and not too terribly busy on a Wednesday evening. All four in our party really enjoyed their meal and the service was outstanding. Pricing was on par with what would be expected in a nicer seafood restaurant. Great atmosphere!

Exceptional in every way. Charming building, it looks like it is an old house. Cozy decor, but not cluttered. Wonderful bar space. Cozy, but not crowded dining area. Hostess was wonderful, friendly, direct. You could tell she had pride in the restaurant. I don't know if she has any ownership, but she made you feel as if it were her restaurant. Wait staff, Ruthie and Kenny were exceptional. Not intrusive, but always attentive. So friendly and genuinely so. Food was exceptional. Menu is hand written daily. Crab soup was great. Small salad before the main course was fresh and a good start. I had seared scallops in bourbon sauce. Amazing. So sweet and tender. The bourbon sauce complimented the scallops perfectly. Wine suggested by Ruthie paired well. Finished with key lime pie with a cup of fresh hot coffee. My plates were cleared promptly but I never felt hurried. My glasses and cups were always full but the staff never was intrusive. Exceptional food, exceptional experience.

Where to start. First let me tip my hat to the awesome hostess. I called at 5.30 and inquired about a reservation that evening. She explained it would be late BUT if we arrived early she'd work us in. True to her word we were seated 90 minutes ahead of our seating time and were treated to an amazing meal. From the presentation of the wine (1/2 off on Mondays) to the terrific entrees and coffee this was our best meal on the island. Kudos all around!

Charlie's L'Etoile Verte has been on our list of "must-visit" places for over 15 years. The menu varies every day and is hand-written on plain paper. Everything is super-fresh, the service is good, the staff helpful and welcoming. So many things we like on the menu but a perpetual favorite has been the Tilapia sautéed with a Parmesan crust. Still as wonderful as always, hot, crisp, flavorful. I had the Grouper meuniere which was delicate and exceptionally prepared. Charlie's had bottles of wine 1/2 price (up to $100) on Monday's, making the evening just a bit more economical. The only disappointment of the evening was the temperature of the crab, and chanterelle mushroom, appetizer. While it was warm, it was only room temperature and would have been more enjoyable at a slightly hotter temp. Charlie's L'Etoile Verte has been, and will remain on my long term "must-visit" list.

Nice spot just did a relaxed Monday lunch. What a surprise to find 50% of all wine under $100 all day. Happens every Monday ALL DAY. The other reviewers has said it all so I thought I would just add the wine info. Really friendly people after we finished lunch and they closed they let us sit on the couches in the bar and finish without rushing. Much appreciated.

One of the best meals I have ever had in my life! I got the blackened redfish with horseradish creme sauce. Absolutely amazing. Also, our waiter was a UT graduate. Go Vols!

Awful. Made reservation for 8:30. Get seated then informed kitchen closes at 9pm. So rushed. It would have been helpful if the woman told me the kitchen closes at 9pm when i made the reservation. Be sure to ask when you make your reservation. Food was alright. Nothing great. Would have been better if i wasn't rushing to eat. Don't waste your money or time.

1st time lunch here while vacationing in Hilton Head based on other positive Yelp rating. Sirloin steak sandwich and crab soup were good and price was reasonable. Waitress was friendly and attentive.

Went back after 10 years and it is still great. 10 fresh local fish selections ! Good cocktails and we had no from for dessert !

Very cute restaurant - WAY overpriced. $30 per entree and they are pretty small portions. The redfish was tatsy but the escargot was very bland. Caramel cake had great flavor but a little on the dry side.

Oh Charlie's... I went in with so much anticipation, that only grew when I saw that the place was jumpin for an off-season evening. We were quickly sat with no reservation. Hostess was polite and efficient. Our waitress was wonderful! Very knowledgeable of the menu, cocktails & wines. The meal quickly went downhill after ordering. Appetizers; The Avocado, Crab, Remoulade was not fresh. Also it had a bunch of "filler-ingredients" like bell peppers for instance. Neither of us care for bell peppers, it would have been fine if it was on the menu. So it went to waste. We also had the Smoked Salmon Garni. This was the only good item we received. The food-runner also "auctioned off" the food, instead of knowing which one goes where. Entrees; The Yellow Fin Tuna was ice cold. The sides were complimentary to the dish. The fish itself was under Sushi grade, when cut it was grainy & stringy. The Wild King Salmon was so amazingly over cooked a can of "Albacore Tuna in water" would have been more juicy/moist. One could literally pick up the salmon piece at one end and it was like holding a 2x4 it was so dry, literally! The sides were inedible because they were too hot or overcooked; the plate was FLAMING HOT, like flaming couldn't touch it for 15min hot! At this point in our downward spiral we passed on dessert and asked for the check... As alternates I would suggest Red Fish on Archer Rd or Sea Grass Grille on William Hilton next to the entrance of Palmetto Dunes. Sorry Charlie!!

We were looking for a good restaurant that had many positive Yelp recommendations and ended up at Charlie's L'Etoile Verte. We were not disappointed! We sat right by the fireplace at cozy little two top. The restaurant looked very festive with all of its Christmas decorations. We had originally been seated in a larger side room but requested to sit by the fireplace. The hostess was very gracious about moving us. We had a wonderful meal, good wine, and good service. We will be back!

Our family has been coming to Hilton Head for the last 32 years. We enjoyed the Blackened Redfish, Salmon and the Scallops at our table. Everyone cleaned their plates and made the comment that we would be back on our next visit next summer.

Excellent food and service. I had Trigger fish, others had salmon, flounder and duck. Presentation and sauces were great. Could improve wine by glass no of selections. But good value spot. Very busy so reserve.

Have enjoyed for many years. Food and service consistently good. Experience on Sat evening not up to their standards.Following is for hopefully constructive criticism for them. Service not as good as usual probably due to too many tables for waitress . Grouper very salty. Glass of decent red wine served above room temp. We hope this will be improved on our next visit.

I went with my friend to celebrate our birthdays. The food wad fabulous(i had fish and she had lamb) and we had bread pudding and creme caramel for dessert. They have a great wine list too. I also line that you get a salad with your dinner. So many places want to charge you $12 for a plate of lettuce. Love it here.

Charlie's offers a wonderful selection of fresh, local seafood. The meal is started with a basket full of 3 delicious breads (wheat, French, and raisin). The entrees are served with a delicious salad (goat cheese and house dressing), as well as fresh vegetables and a tasty potato dish. The presentation of the meal is almost as good as the taste. There are also extensive wine lists and decadent desserts. We tried the pave au chocolat, pecan pie, and bread pudding - all heavenly! The atmosphere is charming and the menus are handwritten daily. For fabulous food with a personal, homey touch, Charlie's is perfect.

Nice beautiful . The bread was fantastic. However The salad dressing was disappointing and salad contained ice berg lettuce. My husband has the beef over pasta which was really good.

What a great spot! My mom, my sisters, and I were looking for a nice spot to get lunch this week and found ourselves here on Monday. Go on Monday. It's half price bottle of wine day (bottles under $100) and that's just a great deal. I'll start with talking about how much of a value this place is even though the food was really the star. Because it's easy to find a great meal while on vacation but it's not always easy to find a great deal. The entrees are amazing and range in price from about $10-12. After two half priced bottles of wine (don't judge!), our total bill was about $85 for four people. And that's great and all but I'm coming back for the food and decor. The restaurant is lovely with fabric stars across the ceiling and fun things on the walls - very french bistro. It was a lovely spot for Ladies who Lunch or a great spot for a couple or double date. Alright the food. So I went to a French bistro and ordered a burger. Once again, I feel your judgement and I just don't care. It's a filet mignon burger. Tender, juicy, and topped with Boursin cheese on a soft ciabbata roll. One of the best burgers I have ever had. It was served with pasta salad and fresh fruit. Delish! Head on over to Charlie's, friends! You won't regret it.

One of a few restaurants that I rate 5 stars. The blackened Mahi was perfectly prepared. My wife's filet was also perfect. The place is a little pricey, but the meals come with salads, potatoes and fresh vegetables. All things considered, a perfect meal with great service for a reasonable price. Definitely, one of our top-five restaurants on Hilton Head.

If I could give Charlie's 100 stars I would. They are by far me and my fiancé's favorite restaurant/ bar on the island (and we've been to a lot). The wonderful food is accompanied by a staff that every establishment would dream of. Jeff and Anthony (bartenders) are so great and always make us feel special. Their happy hour deals were what brought us in originally, but now that's just a bonus to the overall fabulous dining/bar experience. On a final note, there are three things you MUST try: the filet mignon burger, the chocolate martini and the chocolate pave for dessert. They are to die for! We are from Connecticut and are moving to the island next spring, and after settling in the first thing we are doing is going to Charlie's!!!

Charlie's is my favorite restaurant in Hilton Head. I always make sure to stop by for a visit whenever I'm on the island. What's not to love about a place that offers a handwritten menu each day? This allows for the freshest items to be featured for your meal. I will forgive them for misspelling 'dessert' on the menu during my most recent visit. Charlie's is located on New Orleans Rd. in a cute little house. The bar is very popular here. Most people start off there and move into the dining rooms. Service is always outstanding. I have to devote an entire paragraph to their bread. The bread is always one of the highlights of our meal. They have a table loaded with all kinds of fresh bread. As you are seated, they bring out a basket with a variety of bread. It's always sooooo good. On our most recent visit, there was a sourdough bread with cheese baked in. oh em gee. We also had another loaf of bread with fruit baked in. Also delicious. I could make a meal out of their wonderful breads. We started off with the tomato, mozzarella and pesto salad. I've never had a tomato and mozzarella salad with pesto, but it was very good. I'm not the biggest pesto fan, but it actually made the dish taste better than a regular tomato and mozzarella salad. I ordered the veal tenderloin for my entree. It came with a wild mushroom sauce, scalloped potatoes and fresh veggies. All of the entrees also come with a small mixed green salad with a balsamic vinaigrette. I had no problem eating two salads. The veal tenderloin was excellent as was the wild mushroom sauce. I sampled a few of the other entrees and all were delicious.

I've been here twice with my mother in law who loves it. The food is really good and I'm sure one of the more finer dining experiences but the price of the food is pretty high for what you get. The service was excellent and the atmosphere is good but can get loud if they are packed. I would suggest making reservations.

Great, fresh local seafood. Our waitress was very well informed of their menu and what was the freshest. All of our meals were delicious. I got the flounder in the recommended sauce and it was perfect. It is really great that you can replace the recommended sauce with another from the menu if you so chose. Several folks at our table did this and were delighted. Save room for dessert!! The caramel cake is 5 layers of deliciousness served with the most amazing French vanilla homemade ice cream from Hilton Head Ice Cream Company. Beware---this cake is in limited supply each day--see if your server can save a piece at the beginning of the meal! Just another note on the dessert-the French Vanilla Ice cream is delivered daily to Charlie's so if you go by the ice cream shop they typically don't have it in stock to scoop! (But their vanilla and all their other flavors are fabulous as well!)

Fabulous food! Celebrating our anniversary and this restaurant was highly recommended to us. Food was so fresh and the setting was quaint in an old home turned into a restaurant. Our waitress Ruthie was very attentive and polite. Recommend as great dinner spot for couples.

Used to be a favorite of ours, but the menu seems to be stuck in a rut over the last two years. They should re-examine their menu and consider ways to innovate the menu to regain position as a top restaurant on the island. Pros: Great wine list Good service Nice ambiance Cons: Dated French menu Paper placemats Salad is too simple They say the menu changes daily, but it's been 80% virtually the same for three years Bread is nothing special With a few changes, they could make this dining experience more upscale.

Ate here tonite. Cocktails and wine list are ok but overpriced. We had beef and fish. The beef was great. The grouper with corn and jalopena sauce was overdone due to a 425 degree plate. The fish was crispy as was the sauce due to the heat from the plate. The vegetables were stuck to the plate. The manager came to our table and said that he would comp our desserts. Only one was comped. The waiter chased me out the door and said we didn't leave a tip when in fact we left a cash tip of $50 on a $247 bill. Overpriced and under serviced ! Watch out here. I won't be back! Have eaten at plenty of better restaurants. The waiter was not seen from the time our main course was served til the dessert order.

There are many good restaurants in Hilton Head, but Charlie's is one of my favorites. I especially enjoy lunch there. As I understand it it is one of Bill Clinton's favorites, and if it's good enough for him, it's good enough for me. Very very very tasty.

I went with my friend to celebrate our birthdays. The food wad fabulous(i had fish and she had lamb) and we had bread pudding and creme caramel for dessert. They have a great wine list too.

This place was awesome...from the food to the service! They worked with us on the reservation on a clearly busy Saturday night. The food was perfect - scallops were delicious. I had the black grouper. Perfectly prepared. We thought portions were generous. Definitely will make our list of places to visit again!

Just left the restaurant WITHOUT having desert - that is so unlike me. But the noise level was so oppressive I could NOT stay any longer!

Scallops amazing. Get the cucumber infused vodka tonic. Delish. Pricey but worth every cent. Packed with locals and not the tourist crowd.

Our family has been coming to Hilton Head for the last 32 years. We enjoyed the Blackened Redfish, Salmon and the Scallops at our table. Everyone cleaned their plates and made the comment that we would be back on our next visit next summer.

Very cute restaurant - WAY overpriced. $30 per entree and they are pretty small portions. The redfish was tatsy but the escargot was very bland. Caramel cake had great flavor but a little on the dry side.

Amazing... best restaurant on the island with very reasonable prices!!

Very good.

Enjoy!
